Function
Its primary purpose is to seal the variable valve timing (VVT) camshaft adjuster magnet/solenoid (often referred to as the N205 valve) to the cylinder head or timing cover. This rubber O-ring creates a tight seal to contain pressurized engine oil.
Over time, exposed to high engine heat and oil cycling, the rubber can become brittle, degrade, and flatten. When it fails, it typically causes an oil leak near the upper front or top of the engine block. Because of its location, a failing seal often drips oil onto surrounding hot engine components or the turbocharger, which can create a noticeable burning oil smell.

It is widely used across Volkswagen and Audi Group (VAG) vehicles, most notably on the 2.0T TSI / TFSI (4-cylinder) engines.
